Choose Bold Colors & Lush Layers for a Showstopping Garden

When it comes to home décor, people are once again returning to bolder colors and patterns in paint and fabrics, adding a counterbalance to serene neutrals. This trend is making its way to the garden, as well.
“This year gardeners are looking for plants with bold colors and lush layers that provide depth, energy and stunning visual interest,” said Katie Tamony, Monrovia’s chief marketing officer and trend spotter. “Color is another way to infuse the garden with joy. This trend focuses on adding saturated hues and interesting foliage, backed by cool whites and greens.”
Bold Colors & Lush Layers
Big blooms, electric colors and jaw-dropping depth are the keys to a garden that celebrates bold colors and lush layers. Here are a few favorites for adding the brightest colors and lots of layers.
Eau de Parfum™ Bling Rose – There is so much to love about this rose, including its big, vibrant fuchsia blooms that provide layers of color in the garden. Each variety in the Eau de Parfum series has a high petal count and exceptional fragrance, plus they are disease resistant. Blooming repeatedly from early spring until first frost, this variety will provide enjoyment all season long. There are four colors to choose from including Bling, Berry, Blush, and Bubbly. Zones 5-10.
Firefrost™ Lantana – This new perennial Lantana has electric red flowers with yellow-orange centers, adding a hot pop of color to your garden. Firefrost is exceptionally cold hardy, showing root hardiness to 0° F. It’s a naturally spreading variety that grows to about 18 inches tall and 36 inches wide. Zones 7-11.
Garden Candy™ Evie Jane Itoh Peony – This peony is covered in lush layers of large, double, glowing magenta blooms that feature a sunny yellow centers. This compact peony holds the flowers closer to the foliage for a rounded ball of color that doesn’t require staking. Zones 4-9.
Panama Red Coneflower – This new coneflower has striking red blooms that will make you stop to stare. Panama Red stays compact in the garden, making it perfect addition to the perennial boarder and containers. Plus, it’s a favorite for pollinators like hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and birds. Zones 4-9.
Seaside Serenade® Newport – This is not just another beautiful hydrangea; it’s a showstopper. This mophead variety features bold flowers that are a deep plum in acidic soils or a vibrant pink in more alkaline soils. Like the others in the Seaside Serenade Collection, Newport features exceptionally strong stems that do not flop in windy or rainy weather. This is great for containers, mass plantings and more, and the blooms last up to three months and work exceptionally well in cut flower arrangements. Zones 4-9.
Visions Volcano Astilbe – Bright pink flower plumes adorn this outstanding and herbaceous perennial. This plant has a smaller stature, making it a great choice for containers or at the front of shaded beds. Zones 4-8.
Intriguing Textures
Adding layers to the garden can create unique textures that draw the eye in. Ferns and evergreens like these make excellent choices that will help landscapes feel vibrant and full.
Jurassic™ Fern Series – This fern series brings the intrigue. From intricate jagged foliage to broad smooth leaves, there is something for everyone in the Jurassic Fern series. Choose a variety that will add green depth and make your garden even more lush. Zones vary by variety, ranging from 5-11.
Golden Child™ Arborvitae – Golden Child™ is an easy-to-grow, compact, globe-shaped arborvitae with excellent heat and sun tolerance. It literally glows in the garden with beautiful, finely cut foliage, making an amazing addition of color and texture in a bold garden. It handles summer sun with little input, and in the winter the foliage takes on bronze hues. Zones 5-9.
Contrasting Neutrals
Maximize the impact of your big, bright colors with beautiful neutrals that add pizzazz on their own while complimenting the bold plants you’ve selected. Varieties like these provide contrast, creating an accent to your colorful landscape.
Endless Hellebore – This compact, upward facing Hellebore is an award-winner with an extended bloom season, featuring abundant and long-lasting flowers. Glossy, dark green foliage is topped with upward facing flowers that start out green and transition to a beautiful cool white, perfect for framing your brightly colored other blooms in the garden. Zones 5-9.
Bridal Veil® Agapanthus – Plentiful pure-white blooms and a unique compact habit make Bridal Veil perfect for mass planting or as a container showstopper. This pop of a clean neutral can shine on its own or provide some white space in your garden to balance out bold colorful blooms. A perennial in Zones 7-11, it can be grown as an annual in cooler climates.
Black Beard Mondo Grass – This dramatically dark grass-like perennial is an excellent choice to add contrast to containers or use as unique groundcover. With spiky, light lilac blooms followed by dark, nearly black fall berries, this plant is sure to wow. Zones 5-10.
