Gibbs Gardens opens for the season as millions of daffodils begin to bloom

Tulips, cherry trees, dogwood, forsythia will soon follow

As far as the eye can see, millions of daffodils sprawl across the hillsides and fields.

After a colder than usual winter, Gibbs Gardens is set to open for the season Friday, March 7, as masses of Early Sensation daffodils—the first to bloom each year—and February Golds mark the coming of spring.

More than 60 varieties of early, mid- and late-blooming daffodils appear every two weeks for a full six weeks of blossoms in every shade of yellow—from almost white to peach and deep gold.

“We plant new bulbs in unique designs to give visitors the experience of daffodil blossoms arrayed in rivers of color—flowing waves of golden yellow blossoms covering acres and acres of hillsides,” explained Jim Gibbs, the owner/designer/developer of Gibbs Gardens.

“Each daffodil bulb will divide and double every year, adding huge numbers of blooms to the daffodil gardens each season,” Gibbs explained.

Spring blooms at Gibbs Gardens

Daffodils are just the spectacular beginning to Gibbs Gardens’ unforgettable spring experience. Thousands of tulips—40 different types of early, mid- and late-blooming tulip bulbs—create a riot of color throughout the gardens. Jim Gibbs added thousands of tulips to Le Jardin, his new color garden. In mid-March, Le Jardin will burst into bloom with pink, yellow and orange tulip blossoms. For added color and contrasts, purple, red and yellow pansies are planted between the tulip bulbs.

The dramatic Torii Gates at the entrance to the Japanese Gardens stand in stark contrast to the graceful blossoms of the cherry trees and the bright yellow of daffodils.

As daffodils then tulips slip into bloom, they are joined in mid-March by more than 200 cherry trees, including the same Yoshino cherry trees seen in Washington, D.C. and Kwanzan cherry trees along with forsythia, quince, spiraea and dogwood for a spring welcome like no other.

Beds of colorful tulips bordered by pansies (in the foreground) provide a bright contrast to the vivid green lawn and delicate blooms of the flowering cherry trees.

World-class destination garden

Gibbs Gardens is a one-of-a-kind experience.
