How to Prevent Blossom End Rot Before It Ruins Your Tomatoes

You check your tomato plant one morning and there it is: a dark, sunken patch on the bottom of a fruit that looked perfect two days ago. That's blossom end rot, and it's one of the most common problems tomato growers run into during peak summer heat. The good news is that it's preventable, and it has nothing to do with a disease or a pest.

What Is Blossom End Rot?

Blossom end rot is a calcium disorder, not an infection. It shows up as a dark, water-soaked lesion on the blossom end of the fruit, the end farthest from the stem. Left alone, that spot turns leathery, sometimes black, and can open the door to secondary rot from bacteria or fungi moving in through the wound.

Tomatoes get the most attention, but peppers, squash, eggplant, and watermelon can all develop it. Paste and plum tomatoes see it more often than cherry types, simply because they're growing more fruit tissue, faster, with the same calcium supply.

One thing worth knowing before you panic: blossom end rot on a few fruits doesn't mean your whole plant or your whole season is a loss. It usually means the plant hit a rough patch of stress. Fix the stress, and the next round of fruit comes in clean.

What Causes Blossom End Rot

Blossom end rot happens when the developing fruit doesn't get enough calcium, even if the soil has plenty of it. Calcium moves through a plant slowly and it travels with water, not through the plant's sugar-transport system like other nutrients. That means anything that disrupts steady water uptake, drought, overwatering, root damage, a heat wave, can starve the fruit of calcium even while the leaves are getting all they need.

Here's the part most gardeners don't expect: calcium heads to new leaves and shoots first. Fruit is last in line. During the hottest, fastest-growing weeks of summer, that supply chain gets stretched thin, and the blossom end of the fruit pays for it.

Soil competition plays a role too. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, and ammonium all get absorbed through the same root pathways. Too much of any one of them, and calcium loses the race.

How to Prevent Blossom End Rot

Test Your Soil Before You Guess

A soil test tells you what's happening underground instead of leaving you to guess. Send a sample to your local extension office or use a home test kit. If calcium is low, work in crushed eggshells, gypsum, or agricultural limestone before your next planting. If calcium is adequate but rot keeps showing up, the problem is uptake, not supply which points you toward watering and soil structure instead.

Water on a Consistent Schedule

Uneven watering is the number one trigger for blossom end rot in home gardens. Calcium moves with water, so a plant that swings between bone-dry and soaked can't move calcium to the fruit reliably even in calcium-rich soil.

Aim for 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, delivered steadily rather than in one heavy soak. A drip line or soaker hose does this better than a hose in your hand ever will, because it removes the guesswork.

Mulch to Even Out Soil Moisture

A 2- to 3-inch layer of straw, shredded leaves, or bark mulch around the base of the plant slows evaporation and keeps soil temperature steady. That steadiness is what protects calcium uptake during a July heat spell. Mulch also cuts down on the wide moisture swings that come after a hard rain following a dry stretch.

Use a Calcium Foliar Spray During Fruit Set

Once a plant already shows signs of calcium stress, a foliar calcium spray gives the fastest correction. Applied directly to leaves, blooms, and young fruit, it delivers calcium without waiting on root uptake to catch up. It won't undo damage on fruit that's already affected, but it protects the next wave of blossoms setting fruit behind it.

Check Your Soil pH

Calcium becomes harder for roots to absorb outside the range most vegetables prefer. Keep soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0. A simple soil pH meter will tell you where you stand, and lime or sulfur can nudge the number in either direction if needed.

Leave the Root Zone Alone

Cultivating or digging near the base of a fruiting plant severs fine root hairs, the exact structures responsible for calcium uptake. Once fruit starts forming, weed by hand near the stem instead of hoeing, and skip transplanting or disturbing nearby soil altogether.

FAQ: Your Blossom End Rot Questions

Can overwatering cause blossom end rot? Yes. Overwatering flushes calcium out of the root zone before the plant can absorb it, and underwatering leaves too little water to carry calcium to the fruit at all. Both extremes lead to the same result, consistency is what prevents it.

Can you eat a tomato that has blossom end rot? Cut away the affected spot and eat the rest, if the damage is limited to the surface. If the rot has spread deep into the fruit or looks moldy inside, discard it.

Is blossom end rot contagious to other plants? No. It isn't a disease that spreads plant to plant. Every tomato or pepper plant in your garden can develop it independently based on its own calcium and water conditions.

What can I do once my plant already has blossom end rot? Remove the affected fruit so the plant redirects energy into new growth. Then correct the cause: water on a consistent schedule, add calcium if your soil test calls for it, and confirm your pH sits between 6.0 and 7.0. The next fruit set has a real shot at coming in clean.

Does blossom end rot mean my soil lacks calcium? Not necessarily. Plenty of gardens with adequate soil calcium still see blossom end rot because of uneven watering or root disturbance. A soil test is the only way to know which problem you're solving.

Water consistently. Mulch deeply. Leave the roots alone. The next tomato off that vine will tell you if it worked.
