How to Rescue a Struggling Houseplant and Bring It Back to Life
By Justin Hancock, Costa Farms Horticulturist
Even the most attentive plant parents can find themselves with a droopy houseplant dropping leaves and wondering what went wrong. The good news? Most houseplants are resilient and with a few thoughtful tweaks, you can nurse them back to good health. Here’s how.
Start with the Basics: Light and Water
Light is the driving force behind plant health. If your plant isn’t getting enough light, it won’t have the energy for strong, healthy growth. So make sure your houseplants are in a sufficiently bright spot. Even in ideal lighting, water can make or break your plant’s recovery. Too much water suffocates roots, while too little leads to dehydration. Check soil moisture with your finger or a moisture meter before watering. If your plant seems to dry out faster than usual, it might be rootbound and in need of repotting.
Watch for Environmental Stressors
Houseplants are sensitive to temperature swings. Exposure to sudden or extreme heat—like being left in a hot car—or cold drafts from windows or air conditioners can cause wilting or leaf drop. Jade plants, for example, may suffer if watered with ice-cold water or placed near a heating vent. If you suspect temperature stress, move your plant to a more stable environment and monitor its response.
Clean Leaves for Better Health
Dust buildup on leaves can block light and attract pests. A gentle rinse in the shower or a wipe-down with a vinegar-water solution can help your plant breathe and photosynthesize more effectively.
Repot When Necessary
Spring and summer are ideal for repotting, but if your plant is rootbound or the potting mix has degraded, don’t wait. Just be extra cautious with watering after repotting in cooler months to avoid root rot.
With a little observation and care, your struggling houseplant can bounce back—and thrive. Got a plant that’s giving you trouble? Don’t give up. Sometimes all it takes is a few small changes to make a big difference.
