Autumn’s cooler weather doesn’t mean it’s time to give up color in the garden. Fall can be a great time to plant perennials and shrubs. The cooler temperatures and typically adequate rainfall provide the perfect growing conditions, maximizing enjoyment this season and beyond.
One of the most colorful options for fall foliage is Heuchera. Commonly known as coal bells, this perennial’s wide range of colors include many lovely autumn hues. The color saturated leaves add warmth and texture to the garden. From bright chartreuse, to sparkling ruby, velvety caramel, to deep, dark purples, there is a Heuchera that works for any design style.
“Heuchera are one of my favorite perennials for any time of the year,” said Katie Tamony, chief marketing officer and trend spotter at Monrovia. “They can add a pop of color anywhere in the garden and create a statement when planted in groups. Lighter hued foliage can brighten darker areas of the landscape, while dark leaved selections add a bit of drama and dimension. Heuchera also make a great addition to containers, tucked in to fill a space with color.”
Heuchera thrive in filtered sun to partial share areas of the garden. Evergreen in mild climates, they are hardy to Zone 4. Many varieties feature dainty spring flowers that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
Here are a few of our favorite must-have Heuchera:
This variety adds delicious, on-trend bright and dark color contrast to the landscape. Black Forest Cake features deep purple, nearly black foliage and bright cherry-red flowers that bloom in the springs.
Soft green leaves highlighted with distinctive blushes of orange make this Heuchera a perfect selection for fall planting. The wavy, cupped leaves show off hints of pink, creating a multi-colored effect.
The ruffled, purple-red leaves of Sirens' Song™ Dark Night add depth to any area of the garden. This Heuchera was chosen because its dark foliage holds its color even in sunny locations.
The leaves of Northern Exposure™ Sienna bring bright color to the garden. In spring, they start out a lovely green, transforming to a stunning burnt orange with yellow edges.
