Planting Roses in the Fall: A Perfect Time for a Head Start
Robin Jennings/ Heirloom Roses
Think you’ve missed your chance to plant roses this year? Think again! Fall
is actually one of the best times to add new roses to your garden.
With cooler temperatures and
warm soil still ideal for planting, fall offers the perfect environment for roses to establish strong root
systems before winter. This sets the stage for robust spring blooms. Plus, with autumn rains, you won’t
have to worry as much about watering your newly planted roses.
How to Plant Roses in the Fall
The process of planting roses in the fall mirrors
spring planting. Start by digging a deep hole, amending the soil with peat moss or compost, and adding cow
manure. Be sure to top off the manure with healthy soil to protect the tender feeder roots. Then, gently plant
your rose!
Make sure to plant your rose at least six weeks before your first expected frost. This
gives the roots ample time to settle in before the plant goes dormant. After planting, apply a thick layer of
mint compost mulch around the base to help retain moisture and insulate the roots—don’t be shy with
the mulch!
While some gardeners might recommend pruning back the rose at this stage, resist the
urge! Your own-root rose will naturally focus its energy on root growth, so no pruning is necessary. Simply
remove any yellow leaves and keep the area clear of debris to prevent disease. Be sure to water generously after
planting and monitor soil moisture by checking the top inch of soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to
water!
