Make the most of the wide array of poinsettias this season by using them as cut flowers.
Whether you're hosting family and friends or just want to please yourself, it’s easy to add natural beauty and elegance without spending more.
Princettia euphorbia hybrids are especially nice in bright shades of pink, red and pure white. Plus the flower clusters/bracts are more compact and like a flower.
Place a stem in small vases at each table setting or create a taller bouquet with several. They also make nice wreaths and centerpieces.
Maximize vase life by following these steps:
1. Condition the stems.
This is the most crucial step because poinsettia sap can ruin vase life.
There are two ways to seal the stem — boiling water or cauterize with a flame.
Immediately after cutting the stem, immerse the end in boiling water for 20 seconds to stop the flow of sap. Or sear the cut end with a flame for a few seconds.
2. Transfer to cold water to seal the sap.
Move the stems to a vase with cold water.
3. Keep poinsettias away from drafts and coolers.
Native to Mexico, this plant likes it warm.
4. Use a clean vase and fresh water.
Replace water periodically.
5. Enjoy for up to two weeks!
You can also dress up the rest of your Princettia plants by displaying with candles or incorporating baubles and ornaments.
Natural elements are nice, too, like the dried orange Chinese lantern flowers or berries for Thanksgiving.
