Four Cool Houseplants to Enjoy Year-Round

By Justin Hancock
Costa Farms Horticulturist

Too hot to spend time in your garden? Keep your thumb green with these super-cool houseplants.

Houseplants make any indoor space more cozy and attractive. If you live in a cold climate, they help give you a connection to lush greenery, even during the winter. And if you live in hot climates, in summer, houseplants give you a lovely view inside from the comfort of the air conditioning. Here are four interesting, but easy-care, houseplants you can consider.

Monstera Thai Constellation

This gorgeous plant tops the list because it has big leaves—as it matures, leaves can reach 3 feet across!—and the foliage is variegated with streaks, splashes, and chunks of creamy white. It also bears fenestrations, or cuts/windows in the leaves, giving it a one-of-a-kind texture. Despite its exotic appearance, Monstera Thai Constellation is a breeze to grow if you have a bright spot. Just give it good light and water as the top half or so of the potting mix dries to the touch.

Dieffenbachia Crocodile

Dieffenbachia is a tried-and-true houseplant enjoyed by generations of plant parents, so you can count on it to be easy-care. Dieffenbachia Crocodile is an outstanding new variety that features dark green leaves variegated with light green and white. But what makes it unique is the midrib of each leaf features little crests, giving it the look and feel of a crocodile’s skin. Give it medium to bright light, regular watering, and watch it grow!

Philodendron tortum

Sometimes Philodendron tortum is mistaken for a fern or a palm, but this low-maintenance houseplant is more forgiving than both! A unique vining plant, each leaf has deep lobes, giving it a delicate texture and almost see-through appearance. But it’s easy to grow—it just needs medium to bright light and regular watering (as the top half or so of the potting mix dries to the touch.

ZZ Chameleon

ZZ Chameleon is a fascinating, ever-changing houseplant that features thick, rubbery, dark green leaves. What makes this variety distinctive is that as the new growth emerges bright golden-yellow, and as each leaf matures, it slowly goes green. It’s also among the most forgiving of houseplants as it’s incredibly drought tolerant and holds up to low light levels (though we recommend bright light; the more light it gets, the more it will grow and you can enjoy the color-changing show).
