Yikes, campers! What a winter! We’ve had it almost too easy in Oregon, not a whisper of snow and temperatures mostly in the forties. So, sympathy for all of you enduring record snows and atmospheric rivers of wetness.
Descriptions of many genera have raised confusion. They state, “I’m not sure where this plant is from.” Copycat breeding is fast and rampant as others are not giving the plants the necessary testing and evaluation and pushing inferior plants into the marketplace. So, Terra Nova looked for a new genus to breed: Phygelius. As plant breeders we listened to the comments and complaints from growers and botanical gardens to create a plant that doesn’t run rampantly, produces scads of flowers in a good assortment of colors, and tolerates heat better than most original varieties. In other words, look at these plants with new eyes. Monrovia did and ordered a whole series of colors for their high-quality program. Pollinators adore the nectar-rich blooms, and you almost have to shoo hummingbirds away when these are in full flower. Make some room for these South African beauties in the ground or center in a container for a spectacular show.
