Six Pothos That Outshine Golden—But Are No Extra Work

By Justin Hancock, Costa Farms Horticulturist

If you love the ease of Golden Pothos but crave something a little more exciting, these six upgraded varieties will show you how to level up your indoor garden—without leveling up the difficulty.

Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) has earned its reputation as one of the most forgiving houseplants around. It tolerates missed waterings, adapts to a wide range of light conditions, and still looks good doing it. But once you’ve mastered the classic, there’s a whole world of pothos relatives and cultivars that offer more dramatic foliage, richer color, and serious “plant person” appeal—while remaining just as easygoing. Here are six standout upgrades worth growing.

  1. Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Yellow Sunrise’
  2. Think Golden Pothos energy, but brighter and bolder. ‘Yellow Sunrise’ pushes out neon-chartreuse new growth that slowly deepens as the leaves mature. The elongated foliage gives it a more tropical look, especially when allowed to climb a moss pole or trellis. Plus it forms monstera-like fenestrations (splits and holes) as it matures.

  1. Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Albo’
  2. This one is for gardeners who love high contrast. Creamy white variegation splashes across narrow, textured leaves, creating a dramatic effect even in simple containers. Give it bright, indirect light to keep the variegation crisp, and it will reward you with steady, elegant growth. Like Yellow Sunrise, it also develops slits and holes.

  1. Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Marble’
  2. Subtle and sophisticated, ‘Marble’ offers marbled variegation that feels refined rather than flashy. The foliage has movement and texture, making it a great choice for shelves or hanging baskets where the pattern can really be appreciated. Unlike regular ‘Marble Queen’ pothos, this variety develops fenestrations.

  1. Epipremnum amplissimum ‘Variegated’
  2. If your taste leans architectural, this is your plant. The long, strap-like leaves feel almost palm-like, and the creamy striping adds just enough interest. It’s an excellent option for gardeners transitioning from outdoor foliage plants to indoor specimens. The golden-yellow variegation adds a level of sophistication.

  1. Epipremnum aureum ‘Neon’
  2. ‘Neon’ is sunshine in plant form. The electric yellow-green leaves glow indoors, especially in lower-light rooms where other plants might fade. It grows just as easily as classic Golden Pothos and makes a fantastic statement plant for beginners.

  1. Epipremnum aureum ‘Fernando’s Fire’
  2. For something truly dynamic, ‘Fernando’s Fire’ brings mottled variegation with hints of lime, gold, and chartreuse. New leaves often emerge brighter and more colorful than Golden, adding a sense of motion and surprise as the plant matures.

All six of these pothos upgrades thrive on the same fundamentals that made Golden Pothos famous. Plant them in a well-draining potting mix, water when the couple of inches of the potting mix dries, and place them in bright light for best growth and color. They’ll tolerate lower light just fine—growth may slow a bit, but they won’t sulk. They appreciate the same temperature range you do, average household humidity, and occasional feeding during the growing season. Let them trail from a shelf, climb a support, or spill from a hanging basket, and don’t stress about perfection—these are plants that reward consistency, not fussing.

Sometimes the best way to expand your plant palette is to start with what you already know and love. These pothos prove that easy doesn’t have to mean ordinary.
