The Secret to Lush, Blooming Roses? It Starts With Fertilizer
The Secret to Lush, Blooming Roses? It Starts With Fertilizer
By Robin Jennings for Heirloom Roses
Every gardener wants beautiful, healthy roses — but too often, even the best intentions fall short. Maybe your roses are growing but not blooming. Or maybe the leaves are pale and drooping. Here’s the good news: you're not doing anything wrong. Your roses are just hungry.
Feeding your roses is one of the simplest ways to grow bigger blooms, richer color, and healthier plants. And the best part? We’ll show you exactly how to do it. (And yes —there’s a special discount on one of our favorite fertilizers at the end.)
Why Fertilizing Roses Matters
Think of fertilizer like a balanced meal for your roses. Sun and water are important, but nutrients are what turn a good plant into a great one. Without them, roses can’t produce strong canes, lush leaves, or repeat blooms. Fertilizing helps your plants store up energy and fight off disease.
In short: if you want more flowers and fewer problems, fertilizer is key.
When to Fertilize Roses
Timing matters. Here’s your fertilizing calendar:
Spring (First flush of growth): As soon as your roses begin pushing out new leaves, it’s time to feed them. This gets them off to a strong start.
Every 4-6 weeks during the growing season: Continue feeding through summer as long as your rose is actively growing and blooming.
Stop 6-8 weeks before your first expected frost: You want your rose to slow down growth before winter, not push out new tender shoots.
How Often to Fertilize
A good rhythm is every 4-6 weeks during the growing season, starting in early spring. If you're using an organic fertilizer like fish emulsion, you can apply it even more often — every 2-4 weeks — as it’s gentle and builds soil health over time.
Don’t overdo it, though. More isn’t always better. Over-fertilizing can cause burn or lead to lush leaves and few blooms. Stick to a schedule and follow directions on the label.
What to Use: Our Go-To Fertilizer
For best results, we recommend using an organic, well-balanced fertilizer. Our favorite? Founders Fish Fertilizer.
It’s packed with natural nutrients that your roses love — and unlike synthetic fertilizers, it improves the soil over time. It’s safe for your plants, gentle on pollinators, and easy to use.
We’ve seen it transform rose beds into blooming showstoppers in just one season.
