Hey, campers! November. Yeah, many of us have to gear up for the holidays, but the plant buyers have to focus on what’s new, what’s hot, and calculate if it fills a trend that’s not nose-diving.
At Terra Nova, we don’t just copy another company’s plants. We use our brains. We create. We revolutionize perennials and reinvent new annuals and houseplants. Yes, dear campers, you smart people are reading this article to collect the news on the fresh, and we have it.
Trends are brought out on a silver platter each year, either by a public relations/media firm or by a number of paint/color companies like Pantone that reveal the emotions and feelings of the day as expressed in color. Trends can move plants indoors as we have witnessed, washed over by a need for sanctuary from the stressors of life and politics. They create a “color-haven,” if you will, to simply chill.
What is missed is the knowledge that Terra Nova™ is evolving (as a verb) their introductions. Look at the two Heuchera in this article. Do you see the evolution? Colors that never existed, extended bloom times for pollinators, and shorter petioles for neater plants in the store and in the garden. Even our take on good old Swedish Ivy (Plectranthus), grabs the variegated plants trend and blows away the older forms with remarkably vivid foliage.
Our catalog, linked below, is an informative tome. Have you ever downloaded it? You will learn of the ways of our breeding and witness the remarkable introductions we have introduced over the last thirty-three years. Besides, there’s a lot of groovy pictures, container combos and especially gigantic installations in Australia and China that use our plants on a huge scale.
Come explore these three remarkable offerings by the ORIGINAL innovators: Terra Nova™.
Heuchera ‘Rosewood’
The deepest, glossiest, burnt umber-brown foliage ever! Greatly resembling East Indian Rosewood, this stout heuchera was very impressive in our sun and shade trials at TERRA NOVA®. Check out the way the leaves are held on shorter petioles. Absolutely thrived in our full sun trials with minimal care, Rosewood’s foliage stayed perfect and maintained perfection everywhere it was planted: sun, shade, containers or in ground, everywhere! This plant was a star. Hardy in USDA zones four to nine. The white flowers on burgundy stems grow to eighteen inches high in a dense habit, sixteen inches wide by eight inches high. Full sun is great, and you can expect blooms from May to August!
An absolute new color in Heuchera! Pearly lavender and rose-colored ruffled leaves are held in a tight mound due to the improved habit and shorter petioles. Both a blender and standout, ‘Iridescent’ lives up to its name. Light pink flowers complement the soft colors in the leaves. Very sun tolerant. Vigorous, too. Hardy in USDA zones four to nine. The pink flower stems grow to sixteen inches high in a dense habit, fourteen inches wide by ten inches high. Full sun to partial sun is great, and you can expect blooms from May to August. Pair it with contrasting colors in containers or in bedding areas.
Any house plant guru knows that variegation is the bomb! This is a TERRA NOVA® twist on an old favorite. More upright, with thicker foliage than the older version. NOVA® ‘Brilliant’ features deep emerald green centers surrounded by a broad, super white edge. Foliage is much thicker than the old version which gives it more protection from foliar diseases. It’s a self-branching, easy care plant. Just stunning in mixed baskets and containers. Excellent houseplant, so not hardy. A single plug or cutting can yield a plant twenty-four inches across in a season. Foliage stays around nine inches high and white flowers attract pollinators outdoors. Prefers full to part shade but can take morning sun. Blooms late, usually from September to October.
