To route prune go in at different angles on the plant, around the root ball, dig in and cut the main anchor root, then as you do that you want to push in towards the plant because you're making basically a tight root ball. What that will do is it will force the plant to create little feeder roots. This will make it easier for the plant to be moved and the plant will be healthier when moved. Ideally moving would be done in the winter, when there is a lot of soil moisture. That will help hold the soil together.
