Show #34/6908. A New Jersey Garden That Overlooks Manhattan

It Makes Sense To Periodically Do Some Serious Pruning

The guys visit an area that really does provide a sense of the turn-of-the-century country estate. But it didn't always look like this. When Louis came here the evergreens on either side of the beds, the Boxwoods and Kalmia latifolia L. Mountain Laurel, had grown so big that they were covering most of the beds that today are beautiful little rock gardens. The same was true of the terrace around the pavilion. So, after thinking about it for a while he decided they just needed to cut them away and leave the rest to shine as Renwyck had intended it to shine. And if there is something we can take from this show it's the need to stand back, look carefully, then edit what's unnecessary, let the best feature have its day and space. This is what Louis has learned in this garden and he's had a great time doing it.
