Best Time To Move Plants

Eric would like to talk about when to dig and when to move plants. Oftentimes when gardening there comes the realization that it’s time to relocate a plant and you already know a better place for it because you have other similar plants growing someplace else. You want to look at a time where it will create the least amount of stress on that plant. Typically that will be the winter, especially with shrubs. Around here Eric thinks that time is somewhere between Christmas and New Years. The heat of the summer is the worst possible time. You need to think about having weeks and weeks of drought at 90 degrees, it’s a terrible time to move a plant. Natalie has one point she would like to make - The only difference is evergreens. She wouldn’t suggest moving evergreens in the middle of winter because at that time of year they’re getting all of their nutrients through their leaves. So if you start to move them when they’re already a little bit delicate it could be a little shocking for them. So wait until early spring on evergreens.
